तस्सेण मग्गो गुरु-विद्धसेवा विवज्जणा बालजणस्स दूरा ।
सज्झाय एगंत निसेवणा य सुत्तत्थसचिंतणया धिती य ॥
To serve the teacher and old people, to keep away from the company of ignorant people, to study the scriptures, to meditate on the meaning of Sutras, to remain alone and to be patient all these constitute the path of Moksha.
गुरु और वृद्धों की सेवा करना, अज्ञानी लोगों का दूर से वर्जन करना, स्वाध्याय करना, एकान्त में रहना, सूत्रार्थ का चिंतन करना तथा धैर्य रखना यह मोक्षप्राप्ति का मार्ग है।
पाणिवह-मुसावाया अदत्त-मेहूण-परिग्गहा विरओ ।
राईभोयणविरओ जीवो भवइ अणासवो ।।
One who has abstained from injury to living beings, untruth, theft, sexual indulgence, possession of wealth and also from taking meals at night does not commit new sins.
प्राणीवध, मृषावाद, अदत्त-ग्रहण, अब्रह्मचर्य, परिग्रह और रात्रि-भोजन से विरत जीव अनाश्रव (आश्रवरहितनए पापकर्म से रहित) होता है ।
आहच्च चंडालियं कटु न निण्हवेज्ज कयाइ वि ।
कडं कडे त्ति भासेज्जा अकडं नोकडे त्ति य ॥
If you have committed any sinful blunder, do not hide it. Admit that it has been committed by you. If you have not committed any sinful blunder, then clarify that too.
अनजाने में कोई चंडाल कर्म (दुष्ट कर्म) हो गया हो तो उसे कभी भी न छिपाएं । दुष्ट कार्य किया हो तो किया है वैसा कहें और न किया हो तो नहीं किया वैसा कहें ।
सोही उज्जुयभूयस्स धम्मो सुद्धस्स चिट्ठई ।
निव्वाणं परमं जाइ घयसित्ते व पावए ॥
One who is straightforward attains purity. One who is pure becomes steadfast in religion. Such a person attains the highest emancipation (Nirvana), like the lustre of fire sprinkled with ghee.
सरल मनुष्य को शुद्धि प्राप्त होती है । शुद्ध मनुष्य में धर्म स्थिर होता है । जिस में धर्म स्थिर होता है वह घृत से अभिषिक्त अग्नि की तरह परम निर्वाण को प्राप्त होता है।
एवं खु नाणिणो सारंजं न हिंसइ किंचण ।
अहिंसासमयं चेव एतावंत वियाणिया ॥
It is the essential characteristic of a wise man that he does not kill any living being. One should know that non-killing and equality of all living beings are the main principles of religion.
ज्ञानी के लिए सारतत्त्व यही है कि वह किसी भी प्राणी की हिंसा न करे । अहिंसा और समता (सभी जीवों के प्रति समानता) इन्ही को मुख्य धर्म समझो ।
माणुसत्तम्मि आयाओ जो धम्म सोच्च सद्दहे ।
तपस्वी वीरियं लडं संवुडो निक्षुणे रयं ॥
After attaining human birth, he who listens to and believes in true religion and practises it with penance and selfcontrol, guards himself and gets rid of the dust of accumulated Karmas.
मनुष्य-जन्म को प्राप्त कर जो धर्म को सुनता है, उस में श्रद्धा करता है और उस के अनुसार पुरुषार्थ करता है, वह तपस्वी नये कर्मों को रोकता हुआ कर्मरूपी रज़ को झाड़ता है ।
जे पावकम्मेहिं धणं मणुस्सा समाययंती अमई गहाय ।
पहाय ते पास पयट्ठिए नरे वेराणबद्धा नरगं उर्वति ।।
Those people who accumulate wealth through sinful deeds, as if they were collecting nectar, get involved in great sins, create enmity with others, and eventually leaving all wealth here, go to hell.
जो मनुष्य धन को अमृत समझ कर, पापकर्मों से उपार्जन करते हैं, उन्हें देखो । वे कर्म के फंदे में पड़ने के लिए तैयार है । वे वैर से बंधे हुए सारा धन यहीं छोड़कर नरक में जाते हैं ।
अज्झत्थं सव्वओ सव्वं दिस्स पाणे पियायए ।
ना हणे पाणिणो पाणे भयवेराओ उवरए ।
Seeing the self in everyone and everywhere, knowing that all beings love their life, we, having made ourselves free from fear and enmity, should not kill other beings.
सर्व स्थल में सर्व में खुद को देखकर, सर्व जीवों को अपना प्राण प्रिय है यह समझकर, भय और वैर से उपरत पुरुष प्राणियों के प्राणों का घात न करे ।
न हु पाणवहं अणुजाणे मुच्चेज्ज कयाइ सव्वदुक्खाणं ।
एवायरिएहिं अक्खायं जेहिं इमो साहुधम्मो पण्णत्तो ॥
Those who support others' act of killing living beings can never be free from all the miseries. All those who have preached true religion have said so.
प्राणीवध का अनुमोदन करने वाला सर्व दुःखों से कभी भी मुक्त नहीं हो सकता । जिन्हों ने यह साधु-धर्म समझाया है उन्होंने ऐसा कहा है ।
पंचिंदियाणि कोहं माणं मायं तहेव लोभं च ।
दुज्जयं चेव अप्पाणं सव्वमप्पे जिए जियं ।।
It is difficult to conquer the five senses as well as anger, pride, delusion and greed. It is even more difficult to conquer the self. Those who have conquered the self have conquered everything.
पाँच इन्द्रियाँ और क्रोध, मान, माया और लोभ दुर्जेय हैं। इस से भी अधिक दुर्जेय आत्मा है । आत्मा को जीत लेने पर ये सब जीत लिए जाते हैं ।
